The Active Traffic Control Mechanism for Layered Multimedia Multicast in Active Network

چکیده
I n multicasting multimedia data, effectively adapting to heterogeneous receivers is very difficult. In this paper we propose an active traffic control mechanism for layered multimedia multicast (ATLM) in active network environment. The proposed scheme controls traffic at each router using the traffic condition of immediate children nodes. Also the traffic adjustment is niuch finer than existing multicast protocols of a granularity of one layer. Computer simulation reveals that the proposed scheme significantly improves the amount of delivered traffic and end-to-end delay as much as about 10% compured to layer-wise adjustment. Moreover, it does not require to maintain multiple sessions for transferring multiple layer data but only one session, and thus reduces the overhead on session management and network bandwidth.

A statistical flow control mechanism for layered multimedia over the differentiated service network
In this paper, we proposed a DiffServ based multicast media gateway, which is called Adaptive Differentiated Service Multicast Gateway (ADMG), to achieve the QoS guarantee and scalability considerations for multimedia presentation systems. The purpose of the ADMG system is twofold: (1) improve the bandwidth utilization by doing bandwidth reservation based on the layered-media aggregation and (2...
متن کاملMeasurements and Observations of IP Multicast Traffic
In this report, we present measurements of IP multicast traffic taken at the University of California at Berkeley. We note that the volume and distribution of IP multicast traffic is highly variable, and can depend on a small number of active conversations. From examining many-way multimedia conferences, we note the need for some kind of conference control, either provided by the application or...
متن کاملOn Event-driven Approach of Layered Multicast to Network Adaptation in RED-based IP Networks
In this work, we investigate the congestion control problem for layered video multicast in IP networks of active queue management (AQM) using a simple random early detection (RED) queue model. AQM support from networks improves the visual quality of video streaming but makes network adaptation more difficult for existing layered video multicast proticols that use the event-driven timer-based ap...
متن کاملAvoiding Unnecessary Congestion Responses in Layered Multicast with Heterogeneous Receivers
Receiver-driven layered multicast has been designed to support scalable multimedia applications and very recently used to support bulk file transfers. Layered multicast congestion control assumes that all the receivers behind a bottleneck are equally able to subscribe to a particular number of cumulative layers. This paper explores the requirement placed on heterogeneous receivers behind a bott...
متن کاملMulticasting Multimedia Streams with Active Networks
Active networks allow code to be loaded dynamically into network nodes at run-time. This code can perform tasks specific to a stream of packets or even a single packet. In this paper we compare two active network architectures: the Active Network Transfer System (ANTS) and the Messenger System (M0). We have implemented a robust audio multicast protocol and a layered video multicast protocol wit...
